Grilled Peaches A la Mode

Nutritionally speaking, peaches are one of summer’s top performers.  Peach nutrition helps your body fight free radicals, prevent cancer and protect your heart from disease.  Caffeic acid, the antioxidant found so richly in peaches has been shown to inhibit a specific cancer found in fibrous connective tissue while other antioxidants in peaches fight certain types of breast cancer cells.  Peaches help battle heart disease, improve gut health, supports your eyes.  So many benefits.  (See the graphic at below. Credit Dr. Axe).  Eating the whole peach, peel and all, provides most benefit.  There is no real benefit in peach syrups, jams or juices.

Grilling peaches is just plain delicious!  Grilling enhances the sweetness of the peach.  You might be worried that the peach will get too mushy, but they won’t if you stick to the time recommended.  Honestly grilling peaches is super easy.  One helpful tip is to brush some light oil, like grapeseed oil, across the top of the fruit so it won’t stick to the grill.  I came across this amazing graphic describing how to grill all kinds of fruit from Sharri’s Berries.  Check it out!

Eating fruit is an important component of a healthy diet.  Each variety of fruit contains unique chemicals, phytonutrients and anti-oxidants that fight specific diseases.  That means we need to eat a wide variety of fruits (and of course vegetables).  That way you’ll ensure you’re getting as many of these unique chemicals your body needs.  Think eating the rainbow when you plate your meal.  Is there something green, red, yellow, orange, purple on your plate?  Enjoy the beautiful colors, textures, flavor of all of these plant sources!

Peaches mean summer is here.  In Idaho local peaches don’t appear until about August which means summer is on it’s last month.  And I adore summer, so I’m not ready to move on to fall.  I’m going to enjoy eating peaches and let the juices run down my face.

Your family will love these peaches.  Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a spoonful of granola and a drizzle of honey for one of summer’s best desserts.
