Pina Colada Protein Shake
What’s your get away place? There’s no question that mine is a deserted beach on the Caribbean ocean surrounded by brilliant blue water, a gentle warm breeze and soft white sand. I eat fresh fruit all day, run on the beach or lounge under the bright sun reading my favorite novels. Sounds pretty darn dreamy if you ask me. On hectic stressful days I go there in my head and find that my fears or frustrations seem to melt away. I can take a deep breath, relax my shoulders and keep life in perspective. Get away places are a good thing to have on hand when life gets a little heavy. But when you can’t really get away, a delicious alternative is this nutritious protein shake which reminds me of my tropical island retreat. Made with pineapple, banana and coconut you’ll feel relaxed and pampered.
It makes a great recovery shake for after a hard workout when glycogen (stored carbohydrate) is used up and muscles need to be fed in order to start the rebuilding process. I like vanilla protein powder because it blends well with lots of different flavors especially fruits. Choose a powder that starts with whey protein isolate (versus blends or concentrates); isolate absorbs faster and is more complete. Look for at least 20 grams protein per scoop, less than 8 grams carbohydrate per scoop and less than 5 grams fat per scoop. There are a lot of great protein powders on the market. I feel good about protein powders sold at Costco and since they come in bulk, you’re getting a good buy.
I blend frozen fruit with coconut Greek yogurt, unsweetened coconut milk and vanilla protein powder along with chopped ice for the perfect post-workout recovery drink, morning wake-up breakfast meal or refreshing mid-day snack. I guess what I’m saying is feel free to include it any time of the day. You have my permission.
