The Perfect BBQ Rub
If you’re like me and love to grill all summer long, you might be looking for that perfect blend of spices, herbs and flavorings to rub on your steaks, ribs, chicken, pork loins or even fish fillets. I found it. This recipe comes from our chef at St. Luke’s hospital where I work as a bariatric dietitian. They shared it recently at a healthy grilling demonstration so I’m sharing it with you now. We’re lucky to have it.
This particular mix makes a large enough batch so that you can keep it on hand to jazz up your meats at the last minute. It’s easy to make and if stored in an air-tight container it will last for up to three months. It calls for dark brown sugar which adds flavor as well as promoting browning during grilling. It’s sweet and savory in one blend.
I can’t wait to keep experimenting with it in other recipes like adding to my Pulled Pork or my Chunky Beef and Bean Chile recipes.
Customize it: It also can be customized to match your preferences. For example, if you want it spicier, add chili powder, cumin and red pepper flakes. For a smokier version, switch from sweet paprika to smoked paprika. For a sweeter blend add allspice, cloves or mace.
You might want to put a little extra in cute bags or glass containers and turn it into a gift for friends. Label it as The Perfect BBQ Rub. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
